Tokajbor-Bene Cellars » Introduction

Tokajbor-Bene Cellars is a family enterprise in Bodrogkeresztúr founded in 1998 by Mr. Miklós Bene, a local viticulturist with 25 year wine making experience.
The Tokaj wine specialities, which are well known all over the world, are made from white grapes growing on the vine-covered slopes of the once volcanic Zemplén mountains situated in Tokaj-Hegyalja, north-east Hungary. Tokajbor-Bene Cellars possesses seven hectares around Bodrogkeresztúr in Lapis-, Szepsy-, Kisvár-, Dereszla-, and Kastély areas. The vines grown here have the same characteristics as those throughout the district. 76% of the vine stock is constituted by Furmint, 20% by Hárslevelû and 4% by Yellow Muscat sorts. The yield from Tokajbor-Bene plantations is complemented with grapes purchased from private vine growers. In 1999, as part of a considerable investment supported by PHARE funds we installed a highly sophisticated system to automate grape procession, wine treatment and bottling of the final product. Bottle charging is carried out by an AST-24/1 sterilization device and a GAI 1510 filler and corker machine.

Tokajbor-Bene Cellars produces a full range of Tokaj wines from excellent raw materials. These are:
Furmint: dry/semi-sweet; A wine made from the prevailing sort traditional in the wine district. It has lovely acids, a delicate, almondish flavour, and a long after-taste.
Tokaj Yellow Muscat: semi-sweet/semi-dry; An elegant wine with inimitable flavours. Its bouquet is determined by the primary aromas of the sort.
Late vintage wines (Yellow Muscat, Hárslevelû, Furmint): Sweet wines of outstanding quality with a honey-lemon bouquet. In their flavour, the tastes of Turkish sorbet, dates and apricot are blended with that of fresh lemon-peel. These wines are not mellowed in wooden barrels. Instead, fruity aromas are given preference in them.
Tokaji Szamorodni: dry/sweet; A Tokaj wine speciality with an intense gauntry bouquet. In the taste of this wine there is a perfect balance of peanut and almond flavours. The wine has a moderate acid content.
Tokaji Aszú (3, 4, 5, or 6 butt) Aszú Essence; Natúr Essence: The Aszú wines are incredibly rich in flavours of honey, caramel, apricot and dried fuits deriving from the noble, shrunk grapes. Beside the ripe fruit flavour and the effect of Botrytis, well perceptible are other characters originating from the seasoning process that render these wines real Tokaji. Due to the several year-long seasoning process the Aszú wines develop a wonderful aroma that later perfects itself in the bottle. This wine is recommended with desserts, goose liver and cheese. What is more, it should be a permanent festive board requisite. Tokaji Aszú preserves its quality for long decades.
Natúr Essence is a noble juice with an extremely high sugar and a very low alcohol content. The juice drips out of the aszú grapes as their weight presses down. Natúr Essence is the right choice to sweeten the day of Tokajbor-Bene Cellars visitors.
The 150 year-old and 1000 hectoliter wooden barrels used for the lengthy seasoning of noble wines are placed deep down the cellars of the Máriássy family. The wines mellowed in such barrels are uniquely rich in oxidative flavours. The cellar walls are covered with Cladosporium cellare, a fine mould, which takes a prominent part in the seasoning of noble wines. The mould is fed by the wine ingredients escaping from the barrels together with the spirit vapour. The mould also kills harmful micro-organisms in the air and compensates for ambient humidity changes.

The management of Tokajbor-Bene Cellars have paid great attention to the maintenance of the traditionally high quality of the wines, the assortment of which has been expanded for 30 years. Wines from the best years are preserved to demonstrate the unique richness in flavour and bouquet of these wines.

Philosophy of the Cellars:
Tokajbor-Bene Cellars is committed to enhancing the reputation of the Tokaji by producing it in the traditional manner so that it is placed on the consumers' tables as wine of the highest quality.
